Gather Your Ingredients for Pizza Perfection

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and the ability to customize. For the ultimate flaky crust, I highly recommend using puff pastry. Its distinct layers expand beautifully in the air fryer, creating a light, airy, and undeniably tender texture. If puff pastry isn’t available or preferred, you can certainly substitute it with pre-made pizza dough. Just be sure to roll it out thinly, aiming for a thickness of about 1/8 inch, similar to puff pastry, to ensure it cooks evenly and crisps up nicely.

Beyond the crust, the key to sensational pizza rolls lies in your choice of toppings. Feel free to get creative and use your absolute favorites! For this specific recipe, I opted for a classic combination of savory pepperoni and crumbled sausage, which provides a rich, meaty depth of flavor.

  • Puff Pastry: One standard package, typically containing two sheets. This forms the signature flaky crust. Ensure it’s thawed before use for easy handling.
  • Pizza Sauce: Your favorite brand works perfectly. A good quality sauce provides that essential tangy and savory base. Remember to reserve some for dipping!
  • Your Favorite Pizza Toppings:
    • Pepperoni: Classic, spicy, and delicious.
    • Cooked Sausage: Crumbled and pre-cooked adds robust flavor and texture.
    • Other ideas: cooked mushrooms, diced bell peppers, finely chopped onions, olives, or even cooked ham.
  • Mozzarella Cheese: Shredded mozzarella is ideal for its excellent melting properties, creating that irresistible gooey stretch in every bite.
  • Oil Spray (or Melted Butter): A light spritz of cooking oil or a brush of melted butter helps achieve that beautiful golden-brown and crispy finish on the pastry. Avocado oil is a fantastic choice due to its high smoke point.

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Perfect Air Fryer Pizza Rolls

Making these homemade air fryer pizza rolls is surprisingly straightforward, and the results are consistently spectacular. Follow these simple steps for flaky, cheesy, and utterly delicious pinwheels.

Step 1: Prepare the Puff Pastry Foundation

Begin by preheating your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Most air fryers have a dedicated preheat function; otherwise, simply turn it on for a few minutes. While your air fryer heats up, prepare your workspace. Lightly dust a clean countertop or a large cutting board with a thin layer of all-purpose flour. This crucial step prevents the delicate puff pastry from sticking as you roll it out, ensuring it remains intact and easy to work with. Carefully unroll both sheets of puff pastry onto the floured surface. Using a rolling pin, gently roll each sheet out to an even thickness of approximately 1/8 inch (about 3mm). This thinness is key to achieving that signature crispiness and ensuring the rolls cook through properly.

Step 2: Layering Your Favorite Toppings

Now comes the fun part – assembling your pizza rolls! Evenly spread a generous layer of pizza sauce over the entire surface of each rolled-out puff pastry sheet, extending almost to the edges. Be mindful not to over-sauce, as this can make the pastry soggy. Remember to set aside a small amount of pizza sauce; it will be perfect for dipping your cooked pizza rolls later. Next, lavishly layer your chosen pizza toppings. For this recipe, we’re using a delicious combination of pepperoni slices, crumbled cooked sausage, and fresh mozzarella cheese. Distribute the toppings evenly across the sauce, ensuring every future pinwheel gets a good share of flavor. Don’t be shy with the cheese – it adds incredible richness and helps bind the rolls together.

Step 3: Roll It Up and Slice into Pinwheels

With your toppings in place, it’s time to transform the flat pastry into delightful logs. Starting from one of the longer sides of the pastry sheet, carefully and tightly roll the puff pastry towards you. As you roll, gently tuck in any stray pizza toppings to keep them securely inside. The goal is to create a snug, even log. Once you’ve rolled both sheets into logs, use a sharp knife to cut each log into individual pinwheels. Each pinwheel should be approximately 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) thick, or roughly the width of two fingers. Aim for consistency in thickness to ensure uniform cooking.

Step 4: Air Fry Them to Golden Perfection

Before placing your pinwheels, lightly spray the bottom of your air fryer basket with cooking oil. This prevents sticking, especially as the cheese melts and the pastry puffs up. Carefully arrange your pizza rolls in a single layer within the air fryer basket. It’s crucial to leave ample space between each roll; overcrowding will lead to uneven cooking and less crispiness. The hot air needs to circulate freely around each piece. Next, give the tops of the pizza rolls a quick spritz of oil or brush them lightly with melted butter. This extra step is essential for developing that beautiful golden-brown crust and extra crisp texture.

Set your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and cook for 7 minutes. After this initial cooking time, gently check on your pizza rolls. If any are sticking together, carefully separate them with tongs and rearrange if necessary to ensure even browning. For the grand finale, increase the air fryer temperature to 400°F (200°C) and cook for an additional 3 minutes, or until the rolls are wonderfully golden brown and irresistibly crispy. This higher temperature burst helps to achieve that ultimate crunch.

Once cooked, resist the urge to immediately remove them! Allow the pizza rolls to cool down in the air fryer basket for a couple of minutes. This short resting period is vital, as it allows the molten cheese to solidify slightly, which helps the pinwheels hold their shape better when you transfer them. Serve these hot and fresh homemade air fryer pizza rolls with the reserved pizza sauce for dipping, and prepare to enjoy a truly delightful snack!

Pro Tip: When selecting an oil for spraying or brushing, opt for one with a high smoke point. My absolute favorite for air frying is this avocado oil spray from Chosen Foods. It’s fantastic because the only ingredient is pure avocado oil, offering a clean flavor and excellent heat stability.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Fryer Pizza Rolls

Here are some common questions to help you master your air fryer pizza rolls:

How Do You Thaw Puff Pastry Effectively?

Properly thawing puff pastry is key to preventing cracks and ensuring smooth rolling. If you’re able to plan ahead, the best method is to transfer your frozen puff pastry package from the freezer to the refrigerator about 4 hours before you plan to use it, or even better, overnight. To expedite the process in the fridge, unpack the individual sheets of puff pastry from their box and lay them flat on a plate. This increases the surface area exposed to the cooler air, speeding up thawing.

However, if a sudden pizza craving hits and patience isn’t an option, you can thaw puff pastry more quickly at room temperature. Unwrap the frozen puff pastry sheets and place them on a plate on your kitchen counter. Keep a close eye on them and check their pliability every 20-30 minutes by gently pressing on the pastry. You want the puff pastry to be soft and flexible enough to unfold without tearing or cracking, but still cool to the touch. Avoid letting it get too warm and sticky, as this can make it difficult to handle and prevent it from puffing up correctly. As soon as it’s pliable, it’s ready for action!

How Do You Achieve Perfectly Crispy Pizza Rolls?

The secret to an exceptionally crispy crust on your homemade pizza rolls lies in a few key techniques. First, generously brush the surface of each pizza roll with melted butter or give them a good spritz of cooking oil before air frying. This added fat promotes browning and contributes significantly to the crisp factor. Second, leverage the power of your air fryer’s high heat. While starting at 375°F (190°C) ensures even cooking, finishing them for the last few minutes at a higher temperature, such as 400°F (200°C), provides that extra burst of heat needed to achieve a beautifully golden brown and wonderfully crisp exterior. Always ensure your air fryer isn’t overcrowded, allowing ample space for hot air to circulate around each roll for maximum crispiness.

Can You Freeze These Homemade Pizza Rolls for Later?

Absolutely! These pizza rolls are an excellent make-ahead option, perfect for meal prepping or having a quick snack ready. To freeze them, prepare the rolls up to the point of slicing them into pinwheels. Place the uncooked pinwheels in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze until solid (this prevents them from sticking together). Once frozen, transfer them to an airtight freezer-safe bag or container. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 1-2 months.

When you’re ready to cook them, remove the desired number of frozen pizza rolls and place them in the refrigerator for 3-4 hours, or on the counter for 1-2 hours, to thaw fully. Cooking them from frozen directly might result in uneven cooking, with the outside browning too quickly before the inside is fully heated and the pastry has puffed. Once thawed, proceed with the air frying instructions as detailed in Step 4 for fresh, delicious results.

What Kind of Air Fryer Is Best for Pizza Rolls?

Most air fryers, whether basket-style or oven-style, will yield fantastic results for these pizza rolls. Basket-style air fryers are generally excellent for smaller batches and ensuring crispiness due to direct heat. Oven-style air fryers offer more capacity, which is great if you’re making a larger batch for a crowd. The key is to ensure even heat distribution and avoid overcrowding. If you have a smaller air fryer, you might need to cook the rolls in multiple batches.

Can I Use Store-Bought Pizza Dough Instead of Puff Pastry?

Yes, you can certainly use store-bought pizza dough as a substitute for puff pastry. While it won’t give you the same delicate, flaky texture, it will still make a delicious pizza roll with a chewier crust. When using pizza dough, ensure you roll it out very thinly, aiming for about 1/8 inch thickness, to help it cook faster and achieve a crispier exterior in the air fryer. The cooking time might vary slightly, so keep a close eye on them.

How Should I Store Leftover Air Fryer Pizza Rolls?

If you happen to have any leftovers (a rare occurrence with these!), store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. To reheat, place them back in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3-5 minutes, or until heated through and crispy again. This method is far superior to microwaving, which can make them soggy.

Homemade Air Fryer Pizza Rolls

Yield:
6 servings
Prep Time:
5 minutes
Cook Time:
10 minutes
Total Time:
15 minutes

These air fryer pizza rolls are incredible! The flaky puff pastry makes for the perfect crust. The outside gets fried to a crisp, and the inside is moist and gooey from the cheese. Since the pizza rolls are pinwheels, every bite is filled with pepperoni, sausage, pizza sauce, and cheese. These basically melt in your mouth, so don’t be surprised if you eat all of them!

Ingredients

  • 1 package puff pastry (2 sheets)
  • 16 ounces pizza sauce
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup pepperoni
  • 1 cup cooked sausage, crumbled
  • Spritz of avocado oil (or your favorite oil)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F.
  2. Lightly coat your countertop with flour. Place the puff pastry on the coated surface and roll both sheets out to about 1/8″ thick.
  3. Spread 3/4 cup of the pizza sauce over the top of each puff pastry, coating it from edge to edge. Reserve the remaining pizza sauce for dipping the cooked pizza rolls in later.
  4. Lay out the pepperoni in overlapping rows on top of the pizza sauce and sprinkle on the crumbled sausage to form a uniform coating.
  5. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the top of everything, being sure every portion of the pizza roll is covered in cheese.
  6. Carefully roll up the puff pastry starting from the longer edge and being sure to tuck all of the pizza toppings into the puff pastry as your roll it tight. Cut each log into 1-2″ thick slices, or about 2 fingers thick.
  7. Spray the air fryer basket with oil to prevent them from sticking. Lay your sliced pizza rolls into the preheated air fryer basket. Allow for plenty of space between pizza rolls. Quickly spritz the top of the pizza rolls with oil.
  8. Cook at 375°F for 7 minutes and then cook for another 3 minutes at 400°F.
  9. Open the air fryer and allow the pizza rolls to cool down for 5 minutes before removing them and eating. Use the reserved pizza sauce for dipping. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Allow the pizza rolls to cool down before removing them from the basket. When the cheese cools, it helps to solidify the pizza rolls and prevents them from falling apart.
  • Allow your puff pastry to fully thaw before using it. You can place it in the fridge and allow them to thaw overnight before using.
